What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic, long-term disease that affects the way your body turns food into energy. Your body breaks down most of what you eat into sugar, also called glucose, and releases it into your bloodstream.

When there is not enough insulin, or the body stops responding to it as it should, too much sugar stays in the blood. Over time that damages the heart, the kidneys, the eyes and the nerves — which is why managing diabetes early matters so much more than treating it late.

You do not need a diagnosis to join this program. If diabetes runs in your family, or a doctor has told you that your sugar is borderline, come to a class.
