Octavia Health will be providing health education for seniors at St James Residence every month, starting in August.

The sessions give residents a chance to learn how to manage the chronic conditions that so many of them live with day to day — high blood pressure, diabetes, and the medications that come with them.

Octavia Health is reaching out to the rural areas of Palm Beach County to provide education about breast cancer, and in doing so help reduce mortality from a disease that is highly treatable when it is caught early.

Distance is one of the quietest barriers to screening. When the nearest mammogram is an hour away and a day of work has to be given up to get there, the appointment gets postponed — and then postponed again. Bringing the education, and the scheduling, to where people already are removes part of that cost.

Eat Better Live Better will support the education provided by Octavia Health with bags of fresh vegetables for the community that participates in our programs.

This alliance closes a gap we ran into constantly: people would finish a nutrition class knowing exactly what they should be eating, and then go home to a kitchen where none of it was available or affordable. Now the class and the food arrive together.
